Making Friends

The last weekend of August I attended my 40th high school reunion in Michigan. Our high school class was filled mostly with sons and daughters of auto factory workers and farmers.

Forty years later, we all came from a wide range of occupations and places in life. Yet, what the reunion had most of all was– friends. Everyone just wanted to get caught up, laugh about old times and enjoy being together.

As I look, I see the good friend that lifted me up when my brother-in-law committed suicide. I see the kind friend that has been a prayer partner on Facebook as we have laid parents to rest. I see the best friend that I have laughed and cried with over the years as we have compared notes on family, work and life.

Proverbs 18:24 tells us: “…there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Each day in school, our teachers words and actions are pointing our students to that friend, Jesus Christ. It is my prayer that God’s grace will sustain each of our teachers as they continue to help our students strengthen their friendship with Jesus.
