New Youth Pastor at Kenyan Community Church

On January 23rd, 2016, the Kenyan Community Church, working with the Minnesota Conference installed a locally funded Youth Pastor, Pastor Ezra Kenyanya. Ezra comes with a lot of youth ministry experience. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Science from the University of New Hampshire, and Masters of Science in Community and International Development from Andrews University where he graduated in August 2015.

Ezra has a strong interest in missionary work. He joined STRIDE in Boston, MA, where he received Missionary Training and later joined CAMPUS Ministries in Michigan. He has done evangelistic work in many place like Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Canada. He has helped to establish campus ministries on many campuses. Working with Campus Ministries, he has conducted Bible Lecture Series at University of Illinois, New York University, Windsor University Canada, Michigan Technical University, University of California Berkeley, Arusha Tanzania, Nairobi University and many more.

He has also served as President of Remnant Seeds Ministries, and ALIVE Ministries, been involved as the GYC Africa coordinator, and President of The Pokot mission project. Currently, he serves as the International Director of VUNA, a Christian humanitarian non-profit organization that seeks to meet the physical needs such as health, education, and mentorship in marginalized communities of Africa.

His motto is “Saved to Serve”. Speaking at his installation he said, “We need to put more energy towards the young people for they are the target of the evil one. When we work together with God’s help, we will succeed in building characters for Eternity.”

New Faces at the Office

Savannah B Carlson – Administrative Assistant to the President/Trust Services

Savannah CarlsonWe want to take time here to announce that Savannah B Carlson recently joined the conference staff. She will serve as the Administrative Assistant to the President, Trust Services & Gift Planning, and Personal Ministries Departments.

Savannah graduated from Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska with degrees in Business Administration and Communication. She was the Editor-in-Chief for the Union College newspaper during her time in college 2010-11. Prior to accepting her current position in the Minnesota Conference, she served as Office Manager and Registrar for Atlanta North School in Dunwoody, Georgia and as a Talent Consultant in Human Resources at Park Ridge Health in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Savannah brings a wealth of experience and a track record of success to the Minnesota Conference. She was awarded a Service Excellence Award in December of 2012 and she was a member of the National Who’s Who Honor Society in 2011.

We are confident that Savannah and her husband Andy Carlson, (the Principal and teacher at Minnetonka Christian Academy) will be an excellent addition to the Conference family. She is taking over the position that was vacated by Dee Ann Lechner. Pastor Rob (former pastor at The Edge Christian center) and Dee Ann Lechner took a call to the Johnson City Adventist Church in Tennessee, which is in the Georgia-Cumberland Conference. Please join us to welcome Savannah B Carlson to the Minnesota Conference. Let’s keep our EYES on eternity.

Mindy Salyers to serve as Interim Educational Superintendent

Mindy SalyersIn December 2015, beloved Connie McCormick retired from her role as Superintendent of Schools/Children’s Ministries Coordinator. The Conference is grateful for her wonderful service, and is currently conducting a search process in the hopes to permanently fill this position.

In the meantime, the Conference Board elected Mindy Salyers to serve as Interim Educational Superintendent for the period ending June 2016.  Having served at the elementary, academy, and collegiate levels, Mindy has a heart for Adventist Education. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Southern Adventist University, as well as a Master’s degree in School Counseling from Andrews University.  She has held a number of roles within Student Services, including Residence Hall Dean of Women at Andrews University, Graduation and Retention Coach at Dunwoody High School in Dunwoody, Georgia, Educational Specialist for Collegedale Academy, and School Counselor for A.W. Spalding Elementary.  Most recently, as Bullying Prevention Specialist for the Center for Conflict Resolution at La Sierra University, Mindy led all Minnesota Conference schools in setting NAD precedent by implementing the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program.

We want to thank Mindy for her willingness to cover the Superintendent responsibilities in the interim until a permanent replacement is found. She is excited to serve the students, teachers, and schools of the Minnesota Conference in this capacity.

Pastor Yulian Tinoco to serve as Ministerial Director

15 Tinoco, YulianThe Conference is pleased to announce that in our December Board, the Board of Trustees voted to ask Elder Yulian Tinoco, our Hispanic Ministries Coordinator to also serve as Ministerial Director. He will be taking over the role that was held by Elder Sherman McCormick who retired in December 2015.

Elder Tinoco’s main assignment is still Hispanic Ministries. As a Ministerial Director he will be assisted by Pastor Ken Mayberry for our Northern region; Pastor Robert Brauer for our Southern region and Pastor Jason Salyers for our Minnesota Central region. The Conference also would like to thank Elder Sherman McCormick for his service and his willingness to continue working with the ministerial team in this conference.
