Elder Gary Thurber was serving as the Executive Secretary, and Mrs. Diane W. Thurber was Women’s Ministries Director in Lake Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists at the time of receiving the call to become the Mid-America Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists President.
Gary began his ministry as a teacher at Redwood Academy in the Northern California Conference during 1982-1983. Then he served as the Associate Pastor at Kent Seventh-day Adventist Church (Washington Conference), and also as the Associate Director of Northwestern Ministries. In addition, he has served as a pastor in the Kansas-Nebraska, Florida and Michigan Conferences.
Elder Gary Thurber was ordained in 1987. Since then he has served the church as Assistant to the President in Michigan Conference, President for Northern New England (2000-2002), Indiana Conference (2002-2009) and Rocky Mountain Conference (2009-2013). He has also served on several boards. Elder Thurber comes to Mid-America Union with vast experience in church work. He completed his bachelor’s degree at Southern Adventist University, before earning his master’s degree in religion at Andrews University. He is currently working towards a Ph.D in Leadership at Andrews University. The Thurbers have two adult sons: Ryan and Justin.
The Minnesota Conference and the Mid-America Union Conference welcomes Elder Gary Thurber and his family, and wish him the very best as he transitions to his new position.
