You Are The Light Of The World

Children LaVern and KristinIn Matthew 5: 14, Jesus said, “You are the light of the world”…. The declaration of purpose and mission was the theme for the Southview SDA Church’s Women’s Emphasis Sabbath, August 2, 2014. The day was organized by the church’s Women’s Ministry Team, under the leadership of Melisa Mauk. A diverse group of women participated in the rendering of both church services. Elders Cindy Sly and Rhonda Ravell were the presiding elders while Jasmine and Cheryl Saunders were the praise and worship team. During the service, all of the women in the congregation sang “I Am a Woman” affirming their role in “shining a light that will lead to You” [God]. We would be remiss in not mentioning organist, James Dietel. Violinist, Dr. Joy McIver, played “And Can It Be” as the offertory hymn, reminding all of God’s “Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me”, that is, for all humanity.

Pastor Anna receiving flowers from HannahThe children’s story of the Good Samaritan was delivered in a contemporary, engaging and relevant manner by Cynthia Simba, Pathfinder TLT (Teen Leadership Training Program). In addition, Southview bid farewell to Pastor Anna Romuald, who has become an Associate Chaplain at Southern Adventist University (SAU). Illiana Buckholdt was recognized for her untiring dedication to women’s ministry.Illiana receiving gift Philippians 2:12-15, as read by LaVerne Devnich, reminded the congregation that we are light bearers and should let our light shine. Worship in music, “Be Thou My Vision” presented by Clarinetist, Brittany Stevens, provided an atmosphere of meditation and supplication for God’s presence.

“This Little Light of Mine”, Negro Spiritual, children’s song, and the sermon topic took on a more comprehensive meaning. The speaker, Kristin Breiner, Minnesota Conference Women’s Ministry Coordinator, noted primarily three different ways to shine light in the world. (1)The “Light of Faith”—Do not let darkness overtake you. We can be quieted with the faith God loves. Are you a person of Light? Focus on God who is in control. Faith is not in this world and not in human beings. Faith is in Jesus who has overcome. (John 14:27; Zephaniah 3:17; John 16:33; John 4:4); (2) The “Light of Hope”—Waiting for world peace is misguided hope. Share the story of living hope through Jesus. Everyone has a story. Share your hope. (1 Peter 1:3; Romans 8:24-25); and (3) The “Greatest Light—Love”. How do you treat people–individually and collectively as a church? What would happen if we truly shared God’s love? Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:5-8.

JasminThe congregation answered the call and sang the song of commitment, “Carry The Torch”. “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love”. 1 Corinthians 13:13
