Minnesota Conference Workers Meeting

IMG_1066Evangelism, Preaching, Sabbath School, Teaching, Communication, Youth, each work toward building the Kingdom of God. Worker morale builds the team of Kingdom builders! The Conference Officers agree that building a strong and cohesive working force, for a growing and vibrant Minnesota Conference is paramount. They also agree that it calls for a lot of praying, planning and preparation if the work force is expected to carry out the conference mission.

The Conference brought together pastors and teachers for workers meeting, followed by a Marriage retreat the weekend of August 7-9, 2014. The workers meeting was held at the Edge Christian Center where the Conference leadership wanted to increase awareness of factors affecting the safety of children and young people who attend our schools and churches. Two attorneys, and Risk Management representatives were brought in to talk to the workers about abuse and reporting.IMG_1070

It is generally assumed that people who witness, suspect abuse or maltreatment are going to report the abuse, but research has shown that this is not necessarily true. Arthur Blinci, the Risk Management representative, told the pastors and teachers that “Ignorance can never be an excuse for carelessness in protecting our most prized possessions, our children and youth”. The workers were told, “Pastors and teachers are mandated reporters required to report abuse by law”.

The term “Mandated reporters” refers to professionals identified by law who MUST make a report if they have reason to believe that there has been abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation of anyone in a vulnerable group. Tom McEllistrem, the Conference attorney and Sarah McEllistrem, Attorney, helped to educate the workers on these issues. The attorneys shared with the workers how to navigate the difficult waters of reporting without defaming character. The counsel was to exercise an abundance of caution in protecting people from being falsely accused. The attorneys stressed that when in doubt consult leadership and or the attorney.
